'Hi Peggy, the digital learning platform I wanted to share with you is called Be Connected. It's a great website to build online skills. Here are some of the courses I thought might be relevant for you: Apple iPad Skills, Doing more with your iPad, Learning about Apps, How to email.'

In 1951, my grandma Peggy graduated TAFE at the top of her class for shorthand. Recently, when I asked her to “click on a link” on her iPad, she didn’t understand. It got me thinking about how navigating the digital world must sound as nonsensical to her as her shorthand looks to me. For my poster, the text used is the shorthand translation of an email sent to me by "Be Connected" - a government initiative started during COVID that’s committed to increasing the online confidence and skills of older Australians.

Posters are being sold with proceeds going to the not for profit organisation Connection Art Space. Connection Art Space works with artists from migrant and asylum seeker backgrounds to host exhibitions and workshops in the city of Greater Dandenong, Victoria. Greater Dandenong is one of the most culturally diverse municipalities in all of Australia, with 2/3 of residents speaking a language other than English at home. Connection Art Space’s values of diversity and community align with those of Mistranslations and we hope to support their plight through the sale of our posters.
